Which Garden Pots Can You Paint?

Gardeners Pot Paint suits clay, terracotta, concrete and cementitious pots, as well as suitably prepared plastic and ceramic pots.
Porous pots need an internal liner before painting. Smooth plastic and glazed ceramic surfaces need sanding to help the paint grip, followed by a small adhesion test before coating the whole pot.
The Secret to a Lasting Makeover Starts Inside
Water from damp soil can soak into porous pot walls and affect the paint on the outside. This can lead to blistering, peeling or white salt deposits.
For terracotta, clay and other porous pots, use Harlequin Pot Liner inside and Gardeners Pot Paint outside.
Apply two coats of Pot Liner to the entire inside of an empty, clean, dry pot, including the base and up to the rim.
Keep drainage holes open and allow the liner to dry fully before adding soil and watering.
Plastic pots do not need Pot Liner.
How to Paint Your Garden Pots
1. Prepare the surface
Remove dirt, algae, grease and loose or flaking paint. Sand any remaining sound paint and smooth surfaces, then remove the dust. Allow the pot to dry thoroughly.
2. Line porous pots
Apply two coats of Harlequin Pot Liner inside the empty pot. Allow 2–3 hours between coats, with longer drying time in cool or damp conditions.
3. Stir and paint
Stir Gardeners Pot Paint thoroughly and pour a working amount into a clean container. Do not thin. Brush on 2–3 even coats, allowing 2–4 hours between coats, or longer if the previous coat remains soft or tacky.
4. Let the finish dry
Protect the final coat from rain and watering for at least 24 hours. Allow longer in cool or damp conditions. Avoid painting hot pots or working in strong direct sunshine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Gardeners Pot Paint on terracotta pots?
Yes. Prepare the outside so it is clean, sound and thoroughly dry. Apply two coats of Harlequin Pot Liner inside the empty pot first to help prevent moisture from the soil entering the walls and damaging the exterior finish.
Can I paint plastic garden pots?
Yes. Clean the outside, lightly sand it to help the paint grip and remove the dust. Test adhesion on a small area before painting the whole pot. Plastic pots do not need Pot Liner.
Can I paint glazed ceramic pots?
Yes, with suitable preparation. Sand the glaze to create a surface the paint can grip, remove dust and test adhesion first. Check for exposed porous areas inside and underneath the pot when deciding whether it needs lining.
Can I paint a pot with the plant still inside?
You can paint the accessible outside if it is properly prepared and thoroughly dry. However, moisture from the soil in an unlined porous pot can still cause the finish to fail.
If the pot stays damp, wait until repotting or use a separate decorative outer pot. A removable nursery pot makes it easier to empty, line and paint the outer container without disturbing the roots.
Can I paint over existing paint?
Yes, provided the existing coating is sound and firmly attached. Remove loose paint, sand the remaining finish, clean and dry the surface, and test compatibility before painting the whole pot.
How many coats do I need?
Apply 2–3 coats, allowing approximately 2–4 hours between coats. Drying time varies with temperature, humidity and airflow. Allow longer if the previous coat is still soft or tacky.
Does Gardeners Pot Paint need a sealer?
No additional sealer is required. The finish is designed to develop a naturally weathered appearance. Blistering or peeling is a sign to investigate moisture or adhesion problems.
Is Gardeners Pot Paint a waterproof liner?
No. It provides the decorative exterior finish. Use Harlequin Pot Liner inside porous pots and do not assume Pot Paint is suitable for continuous immersion.
When can I plant and water again?
Allow Pot Liner to dry fully before adding soil and watering. Protect the final exterior paint coat from rain and watering for at least 24 hours, allowing longer when conditions slow drying.
